Talk…about money

Every baseball season gets to that point sometime in July where everything starts to blur together.  The excitement of Opening Day is long gone. The trade deadline hasn’t arrived yet. The weather is hot, the games seem endless, and even diehard Cincinnati Reds fans occasionally look at the schedule and think, “Wake me up when September gets here.”  The Reds were even off on a Monday and we aren’t sure anyone noticed.

The funny thing is, those are often the weeks that determine whether a team is playing meaningful baseball at the end of the season.  The great teams don’t magically become great because they swept a weekend series in August. They become great because they kept showing up every day during the dog days of summer, winning two out of three when no one was paying attention.  A win here, a win there…they all add up when the playoff fight really heats up.

Investing has its own version of the dog days.  It’s those long stretches where nothing seems to happen. Your account grows a little. Maybe it falls back a little. The financial news finds something dramatic to talk about every afternoon, but your own plan feels almost…boring.  That’s exactly how it should feel.

The biggest mistake investors make isn’t during a market crash. It’s during these quiet periods when they become impatient. Suddenly they start chasing the latest trend or wondering if they should overhaul everything because someone they know made money on an investment they’ve never heard of.

Discipline rarely feels exciting in the moment.  Neither does watching a baseball team grind through 162 games.  But championships aren’t won because of one spectacular week, and financial independence isn’t built because of one spectacular investment.  Both come from embracing the ordinary. Showing up. Following the plan. Trusting that the little things done consistently have a way of adding up to something remarkable over time.

Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is simply stay in the game.
