According to a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipx1031.com\/americas-biggest-tax-procrastinators-2021\/\"><span class=\"s2\">IPX1031.com<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\"> survey, a third of us wait until the last minute to start working on our taxes, mostly because it\u2019s too time consuming or complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It doesn\u2019t have to be that way.<br \/>\nHere are a few things you can do NOW to make this tax season easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Have a \u201cplace\u201d for all your tax records\u2026and USE IT!<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Starting this month, we\u2019re all getting lots of tax info from employers and financial institutions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of just tossing those envelopes somewhere to find later, put them in their place. Don\u2019t worry right now about sorting out duplicates or trying to decide what\u2019s important. You can do that when you\u2019re preparing your filing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It can be as simple as a manila envelope or a particular desk drawer or as complicated as an alphabetized set of hanging files.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Whatever way fits with your lifestyle, just do it. W2s, 1099s, K-1s, transaction reports, charitable donation receipts, deductible expenses receipts\u2026put them in their place so when you start filling out forms, you\u2019re not running around the house looking for this or that piece of information when you file.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>If you get any tax information on line\u2026get it NOW!\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Print it out and toss it in your tax records \u201cplace\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s nothing more frustrating than waiting until crunch time to do your taxes and finding out you don\u2019t know your password or there are other login issues. If you need tech service to get logged in, that could take hours. If you need a new password, many financial institutions send you the reset information through snail mail and that will take days, if not longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Max out your 2021 IRA contribution.<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"> You have until April 18<sup>th<\/sup> to make any additional contributions up to the maximum ($6,000 across all IRAs &#8211; $7,000 if you\u2019re over 50). Make that decision now so you\u2019re not up against the clock if you have to move money around to make that contribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Beyond an IRA, if you\u2019re a small business owner or highly compensated 1099 professional service provider (that includes doctors, dentists, lawyers) you should be leveraging both defined benefit and defined contribution programs to maximize your tax deferral oppotunities. The longer you wait on this one, the fewer choices. Professionals will start getting booked up and, while on line software has come a long way, you\u2019ll still need some time to learn how to use it.
