Players who spend their lives training to be in peak physical condition are suddenly dealing with serious injuries, and the news about Jalen Hurts is a reminder that sometimes the stakes are a whole lot bigger than missing a few games. Thankfully, Hurts is expected to make a full recovery, but situations like his make you stop and think about what really matters.

I think about that as a runner. I don’t run because I’m trying to win a race or set some record. I run because I want to stay healthy, keep moving, and be able to get down on the floor and play with my grandkids without needing somebody to help me back up. Those are the things that make life enjoyable, and I’d like to keep doing them for a long time.

We spend plenty of time talking about our financial balance sheets, but I’d argue that our health is the biggest asset we have. You can save diligently, build a nice portfolio, and make all the right financial decisions, but none of that means quite as much if you don’t have the health to enjoy what you’ve built.

There’s a financial side to this, too. Health care is one of the biggest and least predictable expenses we face as we get older. Medical bills, prescriptions, insurance premiums, and the possibility of needing long-term care can put real pressure on a retirement plan. We can prepare for those expenses financially, but we can also invest in our health along the way.

That doesn’t mean you need to run marathons or suddenly become a gym regular. It means finding ways to move more, eat reasonably well, keep up with preventive care, and pay attention when something doesn’t feel right.

You can’t control every twist and turn life throws at you. But you can take steps to give yourself a better chance of staying healthy.

To me, that’s an investment worth making. Because the real goal isn’t just having enough money to retire. It’s having the health to enjoy the life you worked so hard to build.

If you’ve been watching NFL football over the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed how quickly things can change.
