There have been nights at Great American Ball Park when you probably left thinking about what could have been, and there’s no getting around the fact that the Reds won’t be playing October baseball this year. It is a huge miss given this team’s talent.

But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t something to watch. Sal Stewart put together a rookie season that has him right in the middle of the Rookie of the Year conversation. Ely De La Cruz joined the Reds’ 30/30 club, something only three players in franchise history have done. And Chase Burns won 15 games in his second big league season without the run support 15 game winners usually get.

That’s a pretty good group to build around. And maybe that’s what I like about baseball. You don’t get to – and shouldn’t – judge everything by one game, or even one season. A hitter can go 0-for-4 on Tuesday and hit a walk-off home run on Friday. A pitcher can get utterly walloped one night and come back at the next start looking completely different. Investing works the same way.

There are going to be good months and bad months. Some investments will surprise you in a good way. Others will make you wonder why you ever bought them in the first place. The important thing is knowing whether you’re looking at one bad game or a bigger problem. That’s where having a plan matters. You don’t abandon the entire lineup because one player has a bad week. You look at what is working, what isn’t, and whether a change actually makes sense. Good GM’s do it – you should too.

The Reds may not have given Cincinnati the season we wanted in 2026. But if you’re sitting at home watching Stewart, De La Cruz and Burns, assuming the potential lock out doesn’t screw things up there’s a pretty good reason to believe the next season will look different. And just like investing, sometimes the best thing you can do is pay attention to what’s working, learn, and keep building.

If you’re a Reds fan like we are, 2026 has been one of those seasons where you’ve probably spent a lot of time asking yourself, “What exactly are we watching here?” Maybe you even used stronger language than that… It wasn’t the season we hoped for.
