We couldn\u2019t help but shake our heads reading that Merrill Lynch is doubling its \u201csmall household\u201d threshold to $500K<\/strong>. Overnight, what used to count as a valued client is now a \u201creduced compensation\u201d account. That\u2019s like showing up to play baseball and, in the third inning, someone moves the bases farther apart. Same game, new rules \u2014 but only one side benefits.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the problem: when compensation structures shift, behavior often follows. If advisors aren\u2019t paid to serve households under $500K the same way, the service those clients get is bound to change. Not because the advisors don\u2019t care \u2014 most of them do \u2014 but because the firm just told them where to spend their time.<\/p>\n
